Alaska Needs Nonresident Workers was the title of a recent article published by Petroleum News. The article stated that approximately 20 – 30% of the people working in Alaska’s oil & gas industry live out of state. Many Alaskans will argue that the percentage is much higher than that, but from my experience that range seems about right.

Do Alaska residents have an advantage when it comes to securing a job on the north slope? Yes. The state wants employers to hire as many Alaskans as possible.

Most companies have some type of “Alaskans first” hire policy. But, this doesn’t mean that folks living out-of-state are out of luck. There simply are not enough skilled Alaskans to fill every job opening.

To give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want, take the time to emphasize your skills as they relate to the specific job you are applying for. You’ll have to tweak your application to match different openings but the time and effort will be well worth it.
